City Shine Foundation supports two schools in Kayole-Soweto slum in Nairobi, Kenya; Reannon Clarke Primary School (elementary school) and City Shine Secondary School (high school).

Our charity firmly believes in transparency and monitoring. We keep close track of who’s donated to which project. This way we can show the results to the right person and creates a meaningful involvement with the donor.

We do not send money to Kenya! We personally buy all the school equipment needed by the kids from a wholesale store in downtown Nairobi to make sure that the money goes into buying the right materials.

Our dedicated onsite representative Lydia overheads the school projects and sends us regular updates regarding our latest developments.

WHY WE DO IT

Fact

55% of Kenya’s population
lives in slums

Approximately 55% of Kenya’s population (39 million) lives in informal settlements called slums. These slums are everything but child-friendly and very unsafe to especially younger children.
There is little or no access to water, electricity, basic services and infrastructure. There is a lot of alcohol- and drug abuse and many other criminal activities going on in the slums that a child should never be exposed to. Most slum children cannot go to school because they have to work to provide for their family or simply cannot afford the school supplies of a public school.

1 in 10 young people never completed primary school, and so struggle to find well paid work. Over a quarter of young people has less than a lower secondary education, and lack foundation skills.

Education is free in Kenya. Why the need for City Shine Foundation?

Education is free in Kenya. However, there are still some conditions a student should meet before one is allowed in a public school. In a public school, students are required to wear a uniform. Basic school supplies (school uniform, books, exam fees) are often too expensive for people living in a slum. Reannon Clarke Primary School and City Shine Secondary School do not require basic school supplies in order to join the school. City Shine Foundation strongly believes everybody should be able to receive a proper education regardless of having a proper uniform or any other items that are mandatory in other schools. City Shine Foundation offers this support so these students get the opportunity to attend school and work on their future!

100% of all donations goes to our projects!

The education system in Kenya

The first year of primary school is known as Standard 1, the final year as Standard 8. The school year, for both primary and secondary school, begins in January and ends in December. Students get 3 school vacations per year.
In April, August and December.

There are 4 years in secondary school (high school), form 1 to form 4. At the end of the fourth year (Oct – Nov) the students write their final exam which is called “Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination” (KCSE). The pass mark is grade C+. This examination is a major determinant of the student’s future career. A good grade guarantees one a place in one of the public or private universities in the country. However, for the majority of the students of City Shine Secondary this is only a dream that will never come true without the proper funding.
